Sweet Things

Tonight I am watching Jane Austen's Emma on Masterpiece Theater. Poor Mr. Knightley. My sweet husband is patiently watching with me, actually he is playing solitaire. But isn't it nice of him to indulge me? I need to treat myself to the boxed set of Jane Austen DVDs-I think I saw them at Costc0 a while ago. I has been a while since I've read Emma, I may have to go to the Library and check it out so I can read it again-hmm might have to treat myself to a set of Austen books.

Pride and Prejudice and Emma were my favorites. What was your favorite Austen read? One of my favorite Austen style books was Austenland by Shannon Hale. It was fun to read about a modern day Austen loving lady experience Regency England. While looking at this book on Amaz0n, I am amazed by the number of other Austen-style books that have been written. Makes me almost want to look into more of them. One of my co-workers loaned me a series of contemporary Christan-Austen styled books. I tried to read the updated Mansfield Park. Couldn't get into it. Really I am not an Austen junkie!

Back to the thought of treating myself, I am craving German Chocolate Cake. Actually, I find that I crave German chocolate cake every January. Today is my parents 41st anniversary and I recall with fondness watching my mother make this cake from scratch. This is on my list of things to try. Maybe I should have ordered the German chocolate blizzard at DQ last night! I think having a special dessert to celebrate your anniversary is so fun. For Valentine's Day I use to make Creme Brulee for Rick, until I started helping in the Floral Department. Maybe this year I'll find the time to make it, the kids always enjoyed helping to torch the sugar on top. Dessert + Fire = Extra Special. Do you have any special desserts or traditions for Holidays? Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!

We watched the first part of Emma on pbs last week, but now our tv is busted!!!! I think I got the dvr to record the second part (if not, I think we can watch it online). Anyway, I am loving this version too. With the exception of a few actors (can't beat Jeremy Northam as Knightly!). But it's a great!!!!

I've read Austenland, I enjoyed it too. Have you read the Diary books by Amanda Grange? (I think that is the author) She writes books from the perspective of the men, like Mr. Darcy, Knightly, and Wentworth. I've read Mr. Darcy's Diary and it was good, and I'm now working on Wentworth's.

What a fun post! (And happy Anniversary to mom and dad!)

It sounds like I need to watch this new Emma you are talking about. While I"m not a big fan of the newer books based on the Jane Austen ones, this reminds me that I have been wanting to watch the Anne of Green Gables movies. Perhaps I need to buy the set?

Deanne, I'll have to look in to the books by Amanda Grange. They sound interesting.

Mary, I've tried to get Abby to read Anne of Greene Gables, but she wasn't interested in t, maybe she'd like the movie.

That cake looks delicious! Happy Anniversary to your AWESOME Mum & Dad! What a great accomplishment...41 years!

Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorites too! I don't think I've even seen the movie Emma! But I really really want to! And, like Mary, I would love to watch the Anne of Green Gables movies again. It's been years since I've seen those sweet movies! Gosh, I need to make time to watch these classics!

I didn't make the special cake this year. I just kind of forgot everything! What's up with that? I'll have to make it for your dad for his birthday. Rick must be amazing - you wouldn't catch your dad watching anything to do with Jane Austin!
PS Heather, tell Abby I gave the cute notebooks to the Barretts. They were so well made!!!
